Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Patient Access Specialist to join our team at St. Tammany Health System. As a Patient Access Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring that patients receive efficient and organized care in the areas of registration, check-in/check-out, admission, insurance initiation and verification, and benefit research for inpatients/outpatients and scheduling of appointments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Verify insurance coverage and benefits
  • Obtain and initiate authorizations
  • Complete registration pathways in the HIS systems
  • Receive, maintain, clarify, enter, and/or validate physician orders
  • Schedule appointments
  • Determine third-party payer liability for organizational billing
  • Check medical necessity
  • Handle daily batching and posting of point-of-service payments
  • Have conversations with patients to resolve previous and current balances
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 1 year of previous customer service experience in an office/medical office environment, including scheduling, admitting, and/or financial counseling
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced professional environment
  • Demonstrated competency to successfully perform Patient Access Representative duties
Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Maintains a professional and neat work environment
  • Ability to understand and solve complex problems dealing with governmental entitlement programs, commercial insurance requirements, contractual obligations, and reporting requirements
  • Ability to apply the use and terminology associated with CPT and ICD-9 coding, as well as basic anatomy/physiology, and out-patient diagnostic testing medical terminology, Medicare guidelines, HMO and PPO contracts, and other insurance billing processes
Physical Demands

The Patient Access Specialist must possess good physical health and be able to stand, sit, or walk for long periods of time. Lifting at least 50 pounds is required, and the ability to work with a moderate level of noise is necessary.
