Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid Tennessee license with the necessary endorsements. A minimum of a master's degree is required, along with administrative or supervisory experience in compliance with state regulations.


Key Competencies: The school counselor is expected to collaborate effectively with both students and staff, manage student behavior proficiently, adhere to confidentiality standards, promote child safety and self-esteem, demonstrate proper language use, and communicate with clarity. Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential.


Physical Requirements: The role necessitates the ability to see, hear, and respond swiftly to ensure the safety and instructional needs of students. Counselors must articulate clearly and remain physically active throughout the school day, which includes standing for extended periods, bending, lifting light objects, and maintaining good manual dexterity. Emotional resilience is crucial for managing student behavior, and tolerance for common environmental factors in educational settings is required.


Core Responsibilities: The primary duty of this position is to design and implement a comprehensive school counseling program informed by academic, attendance, and behavioral data. Additional responsibilities include:

  1. Collaborating with school leadership to enhance academic growth, college and career readiness, and social/emotional development.
  2. Contributing to the overall success of the school and district programs.
  3. Representing the school system and the counseling profession positively to parents and the community.
  4. Delivering the school counseling core curriculum through:
    1. Direct instruction, collaborative teaching, and developing engaging learning activities.
    2. Organizing group activities that foster academic, career, or social/emotional growth outside the classroom.
  5. Facilitating individual student planning by:
    1. Assisting students in assessing their interests, abilities, skills, and achievements.
    2. Guiding students in setting goals based on their academic, career, and social/emotional data.
  6. Providing responsive services, including:
    1. Offering planned, short-term counseling in individual or small group settings.
    2. Supporting students and families during crises and emergencies.
  7. Delivering indirect student services through:
    1. Consulting with parents, teachers, and community organizations to enhance student achievement.
    2. Collaborating with educators and community members to support student success.
    3. Referring students and families to additional resources for further assistance.
  8. Managing program planning and evaluation by:
    1. Organizing and assessing school-wide data to maintain an effective counseling program.
    2. Evaluating individual student data to ensure effective instructional interventions.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the School Principal.

Employment Terms: The role encompasses a 200-day work year, with salary and benefits determined annually through negotiations between the Board and Association.
