About the Role

The Henry Ford is seeking a highly skilled Collections Specialist to join our team. As a Collections Specialist, you will play a vital role in ensuring the integrity and completeness of our documentary records by researching, cataloging, and processing collections artifacts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maximize intellectual access to collections information through the creation and modification of electronic catalog information, ensuring quality control through associated lexicon, thesauri, and metadata standards.
  • Conduct advanced research using primary and secondary resources to accurately interpret and catalog collections.
  • Determine steps to properly organize and catalog objects and groups of objects in the collection, including physical and intellectual arrangement.
  • Apply relevant professional standards and guidelines, staying up-to-date on revisions in cataloging, including inclusive description practices.
  • Creation of work requests in CMS and/or emails as needed for tracking status of collections processing, documentation, and cataloging.
  • Provide timely reports on status of projects to supervisor.
  • Assist in the development of guidelines for object processing and cataloging.
  • May train or oversee the work of interns and unpaid staff.
  • Work and communicate with a variety of staff, including curators, conservators, digitization staff, or others assigned to this project.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in American History, Information Studies, Museum Studies, or related field.
  • An advanced certificate or degree in Material Culture Studies, Museum Studies, or Public History desirable.
  • Two or more years' training or experience in museum registration, collections management, archival management, or related area preferred.
