Job Summary

Auburn University's Office of the Sr. Vice President of Research and Economic Development is seeking a highly skilled Senior Technology Licensing Officer to join their team. This role will utilize intellectual property, technology licensing, transfer concepts, and organizational objectives to resolve complex issues with organization-wide impact.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in negotiating technology licenses, developing commercialization strategies, and market research. They will also possess excellent technical writing skills and experience in IP evaluation. The selected individual will work closely with faculty to determine developmental strategies for technologies and pathways for protection, as well as formulate patent strategies and coordinate with external patent counsel.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced professional to join Auburn University's team and contribute to the commercialization of research and technology innovation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of industry and legal professionals, and will be responsible for managing ongoing relationships with licensees, monitoring diligence, and negotiating license amendments as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and assess new technology commercialization opportunities arising from Auburn, including evaluating commercial potential and conducting patent searches.
  • Develop marketing and licensing strategies for technologies in the AU portfolio, prepare non-confidential descriptions, and market technologies to identify potential licensing opportunities.
  • Lead business development and/or special project activities, including determining patent strategies for new inventions and assisting the Director of Commercialization in non-management strategic activities.
  • Formulate intellectual property protection strategies, including patenting when appropriate, and manage ongoing patent prosecution with outside patent counsel.
  • Manage ongoing relationships with licensees, monitor diligence, and negotiate license amendments as needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and 7 years' experience in one or more of the following: negotiating technology licenses, developing commercialization strategies, market research, technical analysis, technical writing, or experience in IP evaluation.
  • Master's degree and 5 years' experience in one or more of the following: negotiating technology licenses, developing commercialization strategies, market research, technical analysis, technical writing, or experience in IP evaluation.
  • PhD and 3 years' experience in one or more of the following: negotiating technology licenses, developing commercialization strategies, market research, technical analysis, technical writing, or experience in IP evaluation.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a higher education environment and effectively collaborating with a wide variety of industry and legal professionals.
  • Certified Licensing Specialist Professional.
  • Registered Technology Transfer Professional.
