The Senior Medical Coder exhibits expertise in coding high complexity inpatient records and/or technical outpatient accounts, including but not limited to Observation, Radiation Oncology, Chemotherapy Infusion, Cardiac Catheterization/Electrophysiology, or Interventional Radiology and Surgery, to support Revenue Cycle objectives for prompt billing.
Reviews the complete medical documentation to accurately identify principal and secondary diagnoses, procedures, and complications.
Ensures accurate sequencing of diagnoses and procedures, maintaining a 95% accuracy rate.
Aims to achieve optimal Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) assignments for each coded record with the aid of computer systems.
Demonstrates consistent performance levels; strives to uphold productivity in alignment with departmental goals.
Holds accounts appropriately when additional information is necessary for accurate code/DRG assignment. Engages with relevant personnel (CDI/Leadership/Medical Staff) as required.
Regularly reviews coding literature, stays updated on new or revised coding guidelines, and shares insights with colleagues, as determined by peer feedback and supervisory observations.
Shows interest in and pursues continuing education both within and outside the organization.
Collaborates as a team member to achieve departmental objectives.
Performs all related duties or special projects as assigned or required.
Required Experience:
3-5 years
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in coding inpatient records, ICD-10, PCS coding, and/or complex outpatient coding for Observation, Radiation Oncology, Chemotherapy Infusion, Surgery, Cardiology Catheterization, Electrophysiology, and/or Interventional Radiology.
Educational Qualifications:
High School Diploma Required
Associate's Degree Preferred
Special Certifications:
One or more of the following: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CIC, COC, CPC, CCA, CCC, CIRCC, CCVTC, or any of the Core Credentials or specialty credentials from AAPC or AHIMA.
