Providence, a leading healthcare provider with 52 acute care hospitals across seven states, is seeking an experienced physician leader to drive quality care in ambulatory settings.

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) will evaluate and enhance a culture of continuous improvement to achieve superior clinical outcomes under the Physician Clinical Network (PCN).

This executive will provide vision and leadership, leveraging clinical, organizational, interpersonal, and management skills to build alignment and integration among physicians and providers.

Working within a dyad leadership structure, the CMO will be responsible for the PCN's clinical quality, operations, physician practice issues, and promoting collaboration among Providence Employed and Foundation medical groups.

Through performance improvement plans, standards, and practices, the CMO will drive the goals, objectives, and long-term strategic plans of physicians and providers in the system.

In partnership with the Chief Executive, Physician Enterprise, the CMO will establish governance structures to foster high-performing groups across regions.

Maintain high leadership visibility in regional medical groups and drive Operating Commitments (Quality, Patient Experience, Provider Engagement, Productivity, Risk-Based Performance).

Drive Value-Based Contract Performance using tools to understand total cost of care (VOA and Roadmap) and establish a structure to drive behavior change.

Partner with the CEO to evaluate governance structures for medical groups, enhancing accountability and performance ownership within the groups.

Provide region-by-region support in developing affiliated networks of independent providers for population health services and risk-based contracts.

Ensure adequate Peer Review structures and processes are in place to drive quality beyond clinical care metrics.

Partner with PS&D to manage recruitment strategies, connect to the GME pipeline of new physicians, and build capacity for internal locums support to medical group practices.

Partner with Human Resources and Benefit Trust to modernize benefit, disability, employee assistance, and retirement options to keep the medical group market competitive.

Partner with Operations to help lead the redesign of workflows, aligning EPIC deployment and standardizing practices to ensure all caregivers work at the top of their license.

Help lead financial performance improvement initiatives, such as partnering with Clinical Institutes to ensure medical group specialists are high-performing within institute goals.

The CMO must be a licensed MD or DO with the ability to obtain a license to practice medicine in the United States.

At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience and responsibilities in a health system are required, with an emphasis on standardization and implementation of innovative care models, practice transformation, highly reliable clinical quality, and patient and employee safety.

At least five years of experience as a leading executive in a large complex operation (region or system) is essential.

The CMO must have the capacity to focus, influence, and inspire clinical teams in pursuit of short-term and longer-term goals inspired by the mission and values of the Providence system.

A successful track record of integrating thought, values, and actions in seizing opportunities and taking calculated risks to attain superior performance and outcomes is required.

Demonstrated personal and interpersonal qualities that engender confidence, trust, credibility, and accountability are essential.

A broad knowledge and understanding of healthcare trends, reforms, and their implications are necessary, providing guidance and advice on a local and national level on healthcare reform legislation.
