The McHenry Public Library District is in search of a bilingual, collaborative, and service-driven individual to become a vital member of our Youth Services Team. The successful candidate will enhance our Library's mission by providing assistance to Spanish-speaking patrons. Key responsibilities encompass supporting the Questions Desk, translating materials for various programs and services, conducting bilingual outreach to local schools and organizations, and designing and implementing bilingual programs that are educational, entertaining, enriching, and culturally relevant for our Hispanic youth (ages 18 and under) and their families. There may also be opportunities to select materials for the Youth collection.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to reference inquiries and provide basic reader's advisory in a prompt, courteous, and confidential manner.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of library technology and provide basic instruction on its use.
  • Plan and execute programs that cater to the interests of youth, teens, and caregivers, including story times, summer reading, book clubs, and family activities, both in-person and virtually.
  • Assist in the selection and maintenance of materials for youth and teen collections.
  • Stay informed about current and popular literature and media for youth and teens.
  • Engage in professional development and networking opportunities.
  • Prepare department displays and bibliographies.
  • Ensure adherence to all policies and procedures of the McHenry Public Library District.

Bilingual Services Responsibilities:
  • Perform all duties in Spanish with fluency in reading, writing, and speaking.
  • Design and implement culturally relevant programs and events.
  • Translate youth materials for programs and services, and assist other departments with translation needs.
  • Conduct community needs assessments to identify the needs of the Hispanic community and develop tailored services and programs.
  • Provide school services to Spanish language and ESL classes under the guidance of the School Services Librarian.
  • Offer outreach assistance to community groups serving the Hispanic population.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with schools, daycares, and local organizations that serve youth and teens.
  • Participate in library committees and community organizations aligned with the library's mission.
  • Maintain the library's website and social media platforms.
  • May work in various areas including Early Literacy, Youth Programming, Teen Services, School Services, and Bilingual Services.
  • Undertake additional duties and projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree, LTA, or equivalent coursework, with previous library experience preferred; Bachelor's degree is a plus.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in technology, including Microsoft Windows, Office applications, Google Suite, and online platforms.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of popular materials for youth and teens.
  • Understanding of the recreational and educational needs of today's youth.
  • Ability to work accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish) are essential.

Working Conditions:
  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • May lift or move up to 40 pounds and push or pull carts up to 100 pounds.

Salary:
$17.00-$19.57/hour, based on qualifications.
