Minimum Qualifications
Must possess or be eligible for a Substitute Teaching Certificate through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), requiring 36 college credit hours. Purpose Statement
The role of the Educational Assistant - Special Education is designed to provide essential support to the instructional program. This includes assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of students with special needs in various classroom settings, implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and communicating relevant information to appropriate school personnel.
This position reports directly to the Principal.
Essential Functions
- Administers assessments, homework, and make-up work to support classroom teachers.
- Provides immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by a healthcare professional, addressing health care needs such as diapering, tube feeding, and medication administration.
- Assists students with medical fragility or physical disabilities in maintaining personal hygiene.
- Participates in meetings and training sessions to acquire and share information pertinent to job responsibilities.
- Collaborates with instructional staff and professional support personnel to update progress on Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
- Escorts students to various locations within the school to ensure their safety.
- Implements behavioral plans under the guidance of the assigned teacher to reinforce learning concepts.
- Facilitates classroom activities and assignments as directed by the supervising teacher to support educational objectives.
- Models appropriate social and interpersonal behaviors for students.
- Monitors students in various school environments to maintain a safe and positive learning atmosphere.
- Performs general clerical duties to support lesson planning and instructional materials.
- Reports health and safety concerns to the assigned administrator and relevant agencies to ensure student safety and compliance with regulations.
Other Functions
- Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure the effective operation of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills are necessary to perform individual tasks, with occasional upgrades required to meet evolving job conditions. Key competencies include adherence to safety practices, operation of standard office equipment, and accurate record-keeping.
Knowledge is essential for performing basic math calculations, understanding written procedures, and communicating effectively. Specific knowledge areas include age-appropriate student activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and child development stages.
Ability is required to schedule activities, gather data, and operate job-related equipment. Flexibility is crucial for collaborating with diverse individuals and managing various data types.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures and coordinating with others. There is an ongoing opportunity to impact the organization’s services positively.
Work Environment
The usual methods of performing job functions require physical demands such as significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, along with climbing, balancing, and fine finger dexterity. The role typically involves 20% sitting, 55% walking, and 25% standing, performed under minimal temperature variations and potential exposure to health risks.
Experience: Job-related experience is preferred.
Education: A community college or vocational school degree in a relevant field is desired.
Equivalency: 60 college credit hours.
Certificates and Licenses: Valid Missouri Substitute Certificate.
Continuing Education/Training: Maintenance of certificates and licenses, along with a criminal background clearance.
