Job Summary
Under the guidance of the lead custodian and supervision of the site administrator and maintenance supervisor, the role involves maintaining a designated school facility, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, organized, and secure manner according to a predetermined schedule, along with performing related tasks as necessary.

Job Description / Essential Elements:

CUSTODIAN JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, follow a schedule to perform custodial duties necessary for keeping assigned rooms, equipment, buildings, and surrounding areas clean, organized, and secure; and execute all related tasks as assigned.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to a prepared work schedule, sweeping, scrubbing, waxing, and polishing floors in various areas including administrative offices, faculty rooms, classrooms, libraries, auditoriums, dining areas, and hallways.
  • Dust and clean walls, furniture, woodwork, and other equipment.
  • Vacuum and clean rugs and carpets.
  • Collect paper and refuse from grounds and sweep walkways and entrances.
  • Wash, scrub, and disinfect restrooms.
  • Clean windows, door glass, and drinking fountains.
  • Polish metal work such as door panels and handrails.
  • Empty and clean waste containers.
  • Assist in moving or rearranging furniture and equipment.
  • Replace light bulbs.
  • Make minor repairs or adjustments to classroom furniture.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used in custodial work, such as buffers and vacuums.
  • Participate in extensive cleaning of the school facilities during vacation periods.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards.

Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge of:

  • Modern materials, methods, and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining various surfaces and furniture.
  • Cleaning agents, disinfectants, and equipment utilized in custodial work.
  • Tools and their appropriate use in minor maintenance tasks.
  • Fire prevention and safety regulations.

Ability to:

  • Work independently without immediate supervision.
  • Establish cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
  • Perform physical tasks including standing, bending, twisting, reaching, grasping, stretching, climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, or dragging; occasionally lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.

Experience:
One year of experience in janitorial or maintenance work.

Education:
High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (G.E.D.).

License:
Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license is required.

Fingerprint & TB Clearance:
