Overview:

POSITION SUMMARY
This role is pivotal in steering the financial operations of the Academy in alignment with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). The individual will play a crucial role in offering strategic financial insights and leadership.

Moreover, they will enhance, develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures through systems that bolster the overall efficiency, effectiveness, and financial health of the Academy.

The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), a globally recognized institution, is dedicated to cultivating innovative and ethical leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

As a unique educational laboratory established by the State of Illinois, IMSA enrolls academically gifted students (grades 10–12) in its advanced, residential college preparatory program.

Additionally, it supports thousands of educators and students across Illinois and beyond through groundbreaking instructional programs that inspire creativity and inquiry.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities include but are not limited to:


Overseeing the Academy's Business Office operations, which encompass leading all accounting functions, institution-wide budget formulation, payroll management, procurement, vouchering, purchase order processing, P-Card system management, contracting, and compliance with state-mandated financial reporting.

Providing strategic advice to the Academy's President and Board of Trustees on financial and operational matters.

Serving as the treasurer for the IMSA Board of Trustees.


Leading the preparation of IMSA's annual external budget request and state reporting, including budget tables for the Board of Higher Education, Governor's Office of Management and Budget, and Illinois State Legislature.

Conducting annual reviews and reallocating appropriations to projects that address the Academy's priority outcomes and underfunded needs.


Generating and interpreting reports on business operations, including the formulation and maintenance of accounting policies, preparation of financial statements, operational data, coordination of systems and procedures, and required special reports.


Ensuring the financial integrity and compliance of IMSA's business and financial operations with statutory requirements while managing the Academy's financial system applications, policies, and procedures.


Leading IMSA's annual financial and compliance audit, including the preparation of annual GAAP packages and financial statements, reports, and schedules for the State of Illinois government-wide and governmental funds.

Contributing to the overall success of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy's strategic direction.

Willingness to work irregular hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum required skills and experience for this position include, but are not limited to:

Master's degree in business administration, school business management, or equivalent training.

Eight years of relevant experience in educational, governmental, private sector, or other not-for-profit institutions.

Certified CPA.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.

Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and populations.

Capacity to work independently, resolve issues, seek assistance when necessary, and manage concurrent projects.

Proficiency in computerized accounting software, including configuration and utilization.

Experienced user of common computer hardware (e.g., laptops), office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office, budget software), mobile devices (e.g., phones), and common peripherals (e.g., printers, etc.).

Must possess a valid driver's license.

Ability to travel as required.

Preferred

Qualifications:

Familiarity with State of Illinois procurement processes.

Chief School Business Operations certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is conducted in an office environment with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards. Significant time is spent working on a computer.

This role generally requires mobility, written and verbal communication, hearing and visual capabilities, finger dexterity, repetitive motions, and the ability to load, unload, and move materials/boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.

However, reasonable accommodations, including assistive technology, may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform such requirements.

COMPENSATION:
This position is a full-time, exempt, 12-month, employment-at-will role. The starting salary is no less than $114,605 and is regionally commensurate with training and experience in similar institutions.

As part of the State University Retirement System, the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health and retirement benefits.

The State Universities Retirement System (SURS) is reciprocal with other Illinois public retirement systems such as the Teachers' Retirement System of Illinois (TRS) and the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
