The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Clinical Pharmacist to join our inpatient team. The clinical pharmacist is responsible for delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care to the adult critical care population.

This role will provide pharmacy services in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Medical Intensive Care, Surgical and Neurosciences Intensive Care, and Burn Intensive Care units. Additional cross-training to other inpatient clinical areas may be provided based on staffing needs.

This position will have rotating shifts including weekdays, weekends, and evenings. At University of Iowa Health Care, clinical pharmacists are integral to all facets of patient care, encompassing therapeutic drug monitoring, medication reconciliation, patient education, and the precepting of pharmacy learners.

This position ensures the highest standard of safe and effective patient care through meticulous clinical review and verification of medication orders.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Provide Clinical and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM)
  • Assess the appropriateness of all medication orders, including drug selection, dosage, route, and potential interactions
  • Enhance pharmacotherapy regimens through the application of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles
  • Identify and address drug incompatibilities, contraindications, and patient medication allergies as necessary
  • Employ clinical guidelines and evidence-based practices to inform medication therapy decisions
  • Engage in daily multidisciplinary rounds and reviewing patient profiles
  • Offer drug information and medication therapy recommendations to the multidisciplinary team
  • Monitor patient responses to medications and suggest modifications as needed
  • Ensure thorough clinical documentation in accordance with departmental policies and procedures

Education and Experience:

  • PharmD or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy
  • Current pharmacist licensure by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy or eligibility to obtain licensure
  • One (1) year of applicable pharmacy experience is required. Years of applicable experience include the time spent completing an ASHP-accredited pharmacy residency

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in hospital pharmacy setting is highly desired
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification or eligibility for completing BLS and ACLS certifications
  • Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency in pharmacy
  • Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY2 residency in Critical Care or another specialized area
  • At least 6 months of clinical experience providing pharmaceutical care to patients in critical care areas
  • Board certification in Critical Care, Pharmacotherapy or another specialized field
