SUMMARY

Under general supervision, this role involves serving as a staff psychologist at a professional level, applying psychological principles across key areas such as assessment, treatment, research, training, and clinical consultation.

Positions in this category typically report to a higher-level clinical supervisor and independently deliver a comprehensive range of professional psychological services related to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and co-occurring disorders. Responsibilities include selecting, administering, and interpreting various psychological testing instruments, as well as providing individual, group, and family therapy.

This position requires a solid understanding of abnormal, developmental, personality, and social psychology; the theory and practice of individual and group psychotherapy; crisis intervention techniques; relevant legal and ethical professional standards; and the principles of psychopharmacology and psychobiology. Additionally, knowledge of psychometric and statistical theories, psychological research methods, and the ability to establish positive therapeutic relationships with clients is essential.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Selects, administers, and interprets a diverse range of psychological testing instruments for diagnosing and evaluating clients with psychiatric and co-occurring disorders.
  • Generates comprehensive reports detailing diagnostic findings and treatment recommendations.
  • Conducts direct service activities, including diagnostic evaluations, structured clinical interviews, and therapy sessions.
  • Utilizes various treatment modalities, including psychotherapy and evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral therapy.
  • Engages with clients to enhance their participation in treatment, defining goals and designing supportive intervention strategies.
  • Evaluates client responses to treatment, adjusting strategies as necessary and involving clients in the decision-making process.
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to plan treatment programs and determine case dispositions.
  • Obtains and reviews medical, psychological, social, and family histories through interviews and relevant record examination.
  • Provides guidance and instruction to interns and license-waivered psychologists.
  • Consults with other medical providers regarding the psychological and behavioral aspects of medical conditions.
  • Participates in professional staff conferences focused on psychological assessment methods and results.
  • Advises on the screening of new professional personnel in psychology, including trainees or interns.
  • May provide expert testimony in legal settings regarding psychological evaluations.
  • Initiates and conducts psychological research studies, providing rationale for departmental or service program implementations.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Engagement in County and DMH Management meetings and other assigned meetings.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • A Doctorate from an accredited institution in psychology, educational psychology, or a related field recognized by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.

Certificates/Licenses/Clearances

  • A valid license to practice as a psychologist issued by the State of California Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology.
  • A valid California Class C Driver License.
  • Successful clearance through the Live Scan process.
