About the Role

The SC Johnson Legal Department is seeking a highly skilled Sr. Associate, Patent Paralegal to join our Patent Practice Group. This role will be responsible for managing a large domestic and international consumer-products patent portfolio, working closely with research and marketing personnel. If you have a strong background in patent docketing and prosecution, and the ability to independently oversee complex patent matters, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage US and international patent portfolios for specific business units, ensuring timely and accurate patent filings and docketing.
  • Support patent attorneys in all aspects of global patent portfolio management, including invention disclosures, patent filings, clearance searches, counseling, conflicts resolution, and acquisition due diligence support.
  • Prepare official patent documents, such as Assignments, Power of Attorney, Declarations, and other related documents.
  • Manage and assist US and international outside counsel in all aspects of patent preparation, patent clearance, patent prosecution, and dispute resolution.
  • Work with inventors to gather pertinent information in support of patent applications.
  • Collaborate with business units to gather evidence for contentious matters and collect and maintain patent-use information.
  • Maintain patent portfolio management database, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Monitor and manage annuity activities relating to payments and due dates.
  • Assist with invoice review and management.
  • Support various projects, including Freedom to Operate tracking, Agreement review, reviewing processes and workflows related to patent portfolios, preparing and delivering reports for invention disclosures, and estate review as requested.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree and 2+ years' work experience as a patent or intellectual property paralegal.
  • 4 years patent paralegal experience in a major law firm and/or in-house paralegal experience.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Experiences and Skills
  • Strong working knowledge of domestic and international patent laws and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-performing consumer-products company and manage and prioritize a large, complex workload.
  • Detail-oriented with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work closely and build relationships with domestic and international business clients, team members, and outside counsel.
  • Successful completion of an A.B.A. approved Paralegal program.
  • Online searching and docketing skills (Acclaim IP and Anaqua experience preferred).
Job Requirements
  • Full-time Monday-Friday, core office hours.
  • Remote work available once per week for eligible employees.
  • Business travel as necessary.
