Job Summary

Rochester Precision Optics LLC is seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to join our team. As a CNC Machinist, you will be responsible for setting up and operating CNC equipment, troubleshooting programs, and ensuring that all required processes are completed to produce parts that meet quality and ISO standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and understand blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations, and set up requirements.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and tooling pre-setter.
  • Understand, calculate, and set controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and enter command to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media; observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished work pieces to specifications, using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, comparator, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Comply with company requirements in completing essential documentation as required.
  • Train, assist, and support employees in producing quality parts and in completing all process requirements.
  • Assure all policies and procedures are followed and safety precautions are taken to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Maintain a clean work area and assure safe operation of all equipment.
  • Must be available on reasonable notice for unscheduled overtime to meet production schedules.
  • Perform and document Operator Preventative Maintenance operations as needed.
  • Must fully understand setup and operation of at least two machining fields (mills, chucker lathes, swiss lathes, grinders, EDMs, etc).
Requirements and Competencies
  • CNC programming or experience preferred with ability to edit programs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize accordingly.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Knowledge of GD&T.
  • Complete knowledge of G and M codes.
  • Ability to be a team player.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to communicate effectively to team members and management.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to apply basic mathematical concepts.
Educational Requirements
  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • 1-3 years CNC machining experience or demonstrated experience.

Work Requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to fingers, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk and hear.
  • The job may involve prolonged periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. May involve prolonged periods of magnified inspection (eye strain).
  • Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
  • The employee is frequently required to use the computer.
Work Environment
  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Subject to some soilage and irritation from cleaning solutions. (Lab Coats provided)
  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • Safety Glasses are required.
  • May require area-specific safety training.
  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne paper particles.
  • May work at different workstations as production needs require, or shifts from one station to another, during the production process.
