POSITION SUMMARY:


The Head Custodian is accountable for the overall maintenance and security of the school premises, ensuring the effective use of supplies and equipment while providing leadership to the custodial team.

This role encompasses a broad range of cleaning, maintenance, and operational tasks, guaranteeing a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.

The individual will develop a comprehensive understanding of the facility's operations, maintaining both the interior and exterior of the building.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with supervisors to plan, assign, and oversee custodial operations to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Complete daily work assignments and assist colleagues as needed.
  • Implement building security protocols as required.
  • Adopt energy conservation practices.
  • Identify and adhere to safety and health regulations as well as district guidelines.
  • Ensure safe and healthy conditions throughout the campus.
  • Maintain open communication with the principal or designated supervisor.
  • Foster a cooperative and effective working relationship with staff, students, and supervisors.
  • Support and collaborate with community groups as necessary.

TYPICAL DUTIES:
  • Organize custodial staff work assignments.
  • Guide and assist team members in their responsibilities.
  • Perform routine maintenance on heating systems and prepare for inspections.
  • Conduct periodic inspections of equipment to ensure maintenance schedules are met.
  • Execute minor repairs on custodial tools, building fixtures, and furniture.
  • Order custodial supplies as needed, following district procedures.
  • Coordinate with building administration for event setups.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the building's interior and exterior, including grounds and walkways.
  • Monitor hallways for cleanliness during operational hours.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements for custodial services and safety needs.
  • Participate in the interview process for custodial positions.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Utilize maintenance department services as required.
  • Check communication channels regularly for updates from staff and administrators.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Minimum of three years of professional custodial experience, including supervisory experience or training.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a current Grade IV license for gas-fired or oil-fired boilers if applicable.


KNOWLEDGE OF:

School board policies, operation and maintenance of heating systems, and basic computer skills.


ABILITY TO:

Organize and execute job responsibilities independently, communicate effectively, maintain punctuality, and foster positive relationships with staff and the community.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires physical stamina, including lifting, standing, bending, and climbing. Regular lifting of at least 35 lbs. and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. is necessary.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Employees may encounter hazardous conditions, including exposure to chemicals and varying temperatures. Availability for unusual hours during emergencies is required.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

This position reports to the Building Principal or designated representative.


REPRESENTATION:

International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) – Local 286.


LEVEL OF COMPENSATION:

Compensation is based on the IUOE Salary Schedule.
