Pediatric Anesthesia Specialist

Department Overview: The Anesthesiology Division at VCU Health is committed to delivering exceptional anesthetic services and pediatric healthcare. Our focus is on advancing the field through research in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine while educating future anesthesiologists through comprehensive residency and fellowship programs, alongside medical student instruction.

Primary Objective of the Role: Provide anesthetic care to pediatric patients as designated by the Department Chair or their representative. Responsibilities include conducting pre-anesthetic assessments, administering intraoperative anesthetic management, performing postoperative evaluations, resuscitation, intensive care, therapeutic nerve blocks, and offering consultations for chronic pain management. Additionally, oversee the activities of nurse anesthetists as directed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Education: Deliver clinical instruction to residents, medical students, and student nurse anesthetists. Participate in educational programs and attend relevant departmental meetings as required.
  • Research: Engage in clinical or laboratory research within established protocols. Involvement in clinical trials aligned with personal interests and areas of expertise is encouraged.
  • Community Service: Contribute to departmental, School of Medicine, University, or VCU Health System committees as necessary, emphasizing a positive impact on the institution and community outreach.
  • Clinical Practice: Administer anesthetic care to pediatric patients across various environments as directed by the Department Chair. Supervise Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) as needed and oversee anesthesia management in critical care settings.

Essential Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board eligible/certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and/or certified/eligible for Pediatric Anesthesia Certification
  • Eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Authorized for employment in the United States
  • Strong communication, clinical, and instructional capabilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity within the academic environment
