GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direct oversight of the Fire Chief and/or a Shift Captain, this role involves critical public safety duties aimed at safeguarding lives and property. Responsibilities include responding to alarms, engaging in fire suppression, providing emergency medical assistance, enforcing fire codes, and participating in public education initiatives. Additionally, the position entails maintenance of fire station facilities and equipment, as well as other related tasks as assigned. The firefighter is expected to work varied shifts, currently following a 48/96 schedule, and may be required to assume the role of Firefighter in Charge when designated by supervisory personnel.

The Firefighter operates under the direct supervision of a Shift Captain.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates under the direct supervision of a Shift Captain.
  • Executes firefighting tasks in hazardous environments that require significant physical exertion over extended periods.
  • Maintains personal physical fitness, including strength, flexibility, and aerobic endurance.
  • Must successfully complete an annual physical fitness assessment.
  • Engages in tool and equipment operations, deploys hoses, and participates in various fire suppression strategies, applying fire extinguishing agents as necessary.
  • Performs firefighting or rescue operations while working at heights on ladders or other platforms.
  • Exhibits a positive and professional demeanor while interacting with colleagues and the public, demonstrating courtesy and friendliness.
  • Delivers educational presentations when assigned.
  • Administers emergency medical procedures in accordance with EMS certification for patients in need.
  • Documents incidents related to emergency medical services, fire events, and rescue operations.
  • Conducts business inspections, life safety evaluations, and other fire prevention activities.
  • Assists in the upkeep and maintenance of Fire Department facilities and apparatus.
  • Participates in ongoing training to maintain required certifications.
  • Operates Fire Department vehicles and equipment safely.
  • Maintains proficiency in the operation of Fire Department tools and equipment.
  • Completes additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Current Utah EMT-Basic Certification or higher.
  • Utah HazMat Awareness and Operations Certifications.
  • Utah Fire I & II Certifications.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position involves work in uncontrolled and hazardous environments, subject to seasonal and weather variations. Emergency response travel is required as part of the job. The role involves significant physical risks and demands mental acuity, including memory for details, emotional stability, and creative problem-solving skills.
