Job Description and Duties

The Department of Transportation is seeking a highly qualified Attorney III to join our Sacramento Legal Office. As a key member of our team, you will provide full-service support, advice, and representation to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Key Responsibilities
  • Represent Caltrans in State and Federal courts in all phases of litigation, including trial and appellate work.
  • Advise and assist Caltrans in delivering projects.
  • Handle all aspects of a case, including taking and defending depositions, taking cases to trial as first or second chair counsel, and appellate work.
  • Provide legal research and drafting pleadings.
  • Participate in training and professional development to stay up-to-date on the latest legal developments and best practices.
  • Collaborate with other attorneys and staff to achieve team goals and objectives.
  • Stay current with changes in laws, regulations, and policies affecting Caltrans and the transportation industry.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with Caltrans stakeholders, including employees, contractors, and external partners.
  • Contribute to the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a State-owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required.
  • California Bar membership license is required. You will be required to provide a copy of your license prior to being hired.
  • Experience in litigation, transactional, and house counsel work in legal fields, including but not limited to employment, tort, mass tort, real property, construction arbitration, environmental, and contract law.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and files.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies affecting Caltrans and the transportation industry.
  • Ability to stay current with changes in laws, regulations, and policies affecting Caltrans and the transportation industry.
