Position Overview:
The Nuclear Medicine Specialist is responsible for executing and instructing diagnostic procedures within the realm of Nuclear Medicine. This role involves the administration of radiopharmaceuticals, operation of sophisticated equipment, and analysis of the resulting data. The specialist operates under the guidance of the Nuclear Medicine Supervisor and collaborates closely with Nuclear Medicine physicians.
Key Responsibilities:
- Radiopharmaceutical Administration: Accurately identifies patients, verifies essential information, and establishes venous access for the administration of radiopharmaceuticals. Maintains meticulous records of administration routes, dosages, and technologist identification.
- Patient Interaction: Clearly explains procedures to patients, secures informed consent, and completes necessary documentation for patient information input into the radiology management system.
- Patient Assessment: Reviews requisitions, medical charts, and laboratory results. Conducts thorough patient evaluations, ensuring that female patients of childbearing age are assessed for pregnancy status, with arrangements for testing as needed.
- Advanced Duties: May engage in specialized tasks such as those associated with Positron Emission Technology (PET) imaging or assume a lead technologist role.
- Radiopharmaceutical Management: Responsible for the receipt, documentation, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals, adhering to guidelines established by the Radiation Safety Office and regulatory bodies.
- Quality Control: Ensures the correct selection, dosage, and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals, confirming that each administered dose meets the requirements for the prescribed procedure.
- Image Acquisition: Prepares for and conducts imaging procedures in accordance with established protocols, prioritizing patient comfort and safety. Analyzes and processes images for physician review.
- Documentation: Utilizes various systems to generate accurate documentation, ensuring all orders are completed with appropriate charges and coordinating patient transport as necessary.
Educational Background:
Completion of an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program.
Licensure and Certification:
Must be registered as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), or be registry eligible with a commitment to obtain registration within one year of hire. Continuous education and maintenance of registry status are required.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers is mandatory.
