We are currently looking for a Senior Mechanical Thermal Engineering Specialist to join our Azure hardware engineering team.

Essential Qualifications:

• A minimum of 9 years of relevant technical engineering experience.

• Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field along with 6+ years of technical engineering experience or internship experience.

• Or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 4+ years of technical engineering experience or internship experience.

• Or a Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field with 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

• At least 7 years of experience in Mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Silicon-Package Platform co-design, with a strong understanding of product development.

• 7+ years of experience in advanced packaging (2D, 2.5D, 3D, Land Grid Array (LGA), Ball Grid Array (BGA), Optical) modeling, design, development, and validation.

Additional Requirements:

• Candidates must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MSEE degree with 10 years of experience in silicon packaging product development.
  • Expertise in Thermal Mechanical system design for High-Performance Computing (HPC) products.
  • Strong foundation in advanced packaging technologies related to mechanics.
  • Experience with Foundry Silicon technologies and System boundary conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

The Senior Mechanical Thermal Engineering Specialist will be tasked with conducting advanced mechanical and thermal finite element analysis for High-Performance Computing (HPC) silicon designs, as well as for Microsoft systems including Azure, Xbox, and HoloLens. Responsibilities will encompass:

  • Creating a comprehensive material property database to support finite element analysis across substrates, silicon, interconnects, sockets, etc.
  • Evaluating and characterizing the reliability of Integrated Circuits (IC) packages.
  • Developing and delivering Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for various technology options.
  • Defining, designing, and developing test vehicles to validate Silicon, Package, and System performance.
  • Leading mechanical and thermal analysis for testing hardware.
  • Designing and developing package and assembly drawings to facilitate manufacturing.
  • Driving future package architecture solutions for chiplet architecture, advanced packaging, silicon nodes, and system designs.
  • Collaborating closely with silicon and platform architects, motherboard and package designers, thermal architects and engineers, as well as power and performance engineers.
  • Steering the execution of architectural solutions across product lines or multiple product groups, leveraging cross-functional expertise and industry best practices.
  • Guiding engineering system design decisions that necessitate collaboration among internal and external stakeholders to address platform-specific technology choices.
