Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Trusts and Estates Administration Attorney to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in trust and probate administration, with a strong background in estate planning, tax, and corporate practice.

The successful candidate will be responsible for administering decedent's estates, advising on estate, gift, and property tax issues, and developing and drafting administration documents. They will also be responsible for consulting with clients, advising them through legal processes, and ensuring excellent drafting and writing skills.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, able to manage multiple caseloads, multitask deadlines, and prioritize tasks effectively. They will also have excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to make each client feel like their case is important.

The successful candidate will be motivated to develop a reputation for excellence and add to the firm's reputation in that regard. They will also be in good standing with the California State Bar.

Responsibilities:

  • Administer wills and trusts, prepare trust administration documents, probate administration documents, estate administration documents, and accounts
  • Work with clients and their advisors to gather, inventory, and identify the value of assets; prepare asset allocation agreements and spreadsheets
  • Draft trust administration documents relating to distribution, allocation, and funding of sub-trusts
  • Drafting court documents (such as 850 petitions & 17200 petitions)
  • Prepare estate tax returns
  • Review of accounts, estate tax returns, and federal and state fiduciary income tax returns
  • Conduct legal research as necessary
  • Working with paralegals, legal assistants, other attorneys, and judges as necessary
  • Engage in direct communications via telephone and e-mail with attorneys, staff, and clients
  • Oversee probate matters from filing to discharge, including attending court hearings
  • Properly track and record time billed, and reaching monthly goals
  • Knowing all aspects of the client's matter, attend client meetings and calls related to the matter, handle client communications, review draft pre-bills and invoices for the matter
  • Contribute to firm administrative projects such as forms development, team meetings, etc.
  • Cultivate relationships with the firm's existing and future clients by maintaining consistent and timely communication.
  • Meet billable hour targets and assist with non-billable tasks and projects as needed (e.g., reviewing pre-bills or invoices, working on forms updates, or assisting in research projects).

Qualifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the state of California as a member of the California Bar in good standing.
  • Ability to interact comfortably and professionally with clients, advisors, and other attorneys.
  • Strong drafting skills, but open to new drafting styles to conform to the firm's overall drafting style, formatting, and forms.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Commitment to professionalism, client service, and exceptional work product.
  • Strong decision-making and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to self-start, meet deadlines, prioritize, manage multiple projects simultaneously, work well with change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management, attention to detail.
  • Professional maturity and team player. Ability to function efficiently and productively as a team member with all the interpersonal skills required to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite; Hotdocs, Abacus and Timeslips preferred.
  • Active notary commission, or willingness to become a notary to assist with client signings as needed.
