Job Title: Technical Director

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Technical Director to join our team at the James Madison University School of Theatre and Dance. As a key member of our production team, you will be responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of our productions, including set construction, lighting and sound design, and special effects.

Responsibilities:
  • Supervise the construction, load-in, and strike of scenery and properties for all STAD productions
  • Develop and manage scene shop budgets and initiatives
  • Supervise a scene-shop head and team of student employees
  • Purchase materials, schedule workers, and manage/maintain scene shop and theatrical equipment
  • Implement and support safety protocols and recommended practices
  • Work with production manager, faculty designers, and guest artists to develop estimates, track budgets, organize production milestones, and ensure that material and labor budgets remain in scope
Requirements:
  • Previous professional experience in technical production
  • MFA or commensurate experience as a professional Technical Director
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, and guest artists
  • Working knowledge of technology and recommended practices in the following areas: carpentry, welding, scenic art, rigging
Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment, often under tight deadlines. They will be expected to work effectively at elevations up to 70' (theatre grid) and use woodworking, metalworking, rigging, and material handling tools. A valid driver's license and ability to drive a pickup truck and cargo van are also required.
