Role Summary:

Under the general guidance of a Recreation Services Supervisor, this role involves a range of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the upkeep and repair of grounds, facilities, buildings, and landscape areas managed by Recreation Services. The Facilities Maintenance Specialist may be assigned to various sectors within the division, including Parks/Community Services, Lakes, Landscape, and/or Trails.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize wood chippers, mowers, and trimmers for the maintenance of designated areas
  • Employ and maintain hand and power tools effectively
  • Assist in the upkeep of public facilities and grounds; collect trash, debris, and tree limbs; trim bushes, trees, and shrubs; maintain lawns and flower beds in a neat, weed-free condition; clean, mop, and sanitize public restrooms; replenish paper towels, toilet paper, and soap as needed; manage cleanup after special events
  • Conduct minor and preventive maintenance and repairs on various assigned equipment; maintain irrigation systems; sweep sidewalks and parking lots; groom sports fields and mark appropriately; rake weeds and grass; perform snow removal duties; conduct safety inspections on recreational facilities and equipment
  • Transport waste debris to designated disposal sites
  • Assist in the organization, preparation, and cleanup for special events
  • Schedule and coordinate work crews
  • Analyze operational challenges and propose recommendations for procedural improvements
  • Maintain records, files, logs, and ledgers to provide accurate documentation of work performed
  • Compile data for administrative analysis and prepare reports or summaries from records
  • Act as a representative of the organization
  • Issue citations to the public as necessary
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred. A minimum of three (3) years of prior experience in general maintenance and/or construction is required. Excellent customer service skills are essential. Any equivalent combination of education and experience that enables the successful performance of the essential functions of the role is acceptable.

Licensing and Certification Requirements:

Must possess an Arizona Class A CDL or obtain one within six (6) months of hire. A valid Arizona State Applicators license (Turf and Ornamental & Right of Way Categories) is required or must be obtained within 12 months of hire. Successful completion of an extensive Police background check for citation writing may be required prior to employment. Availability for night, evening, weekend, and split shifts may be necessary.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public
  • Strong customer service skills are essential

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to perform required duties and safely operate necessary equipment and vehicles
  • Effective communication skills in person, over the radio, and by telephone
  • Capacity to perform manual labor for extended periods, including repetitive lifting, climbing, stooping, bending, and twisting, with the ability to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and a maximum of 100 pounds
  • Job hazards may include adverse weather conditions, confined spaces, high traffic areas, exposure to raw sewage, chemicals, rotating equipment, noise, and other potentially hazardous environments
