About the Role

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Senior Patent Counsel to join our team at Neurocrine Biosciences. As a key member of our intellectual property department, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing global strategies for managing our biologics and gene therapy intellectual property portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide strategic intellectual property advice to our business partners on a wide range of topics, including patent prosecution, licensing, and due diligence.
  • Identify and draft patent applications for our biologics and gene therapy inventions, and prosecute these applications through to grant.
  • Conduct strategic IP due diligence, including analyzing the patent portfolios of our competitors and potential collaborators.
  • Develop and implement global IP strategies to protect and expand our biologics and gene therapy intellectual property portfolio.
  • Work closely with our discovery, development, and business teams to identify opportunities for expanding our IP position.
  • Review and negotiate license agreements and IP clauses in other agreements.
  • Support preparation for biosimilars and other patent litigation matters.
  • Manage the use of outside legal counsel globally.
Requirements
  • PhD in genetics, immunology, biochemistry, virology, or a related discipline (preferred).
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) and admission to practice in California (preferred).
  • 10+ years of combined experience in patent prosecution and life-cycle management, with a focus on biologics and gene therapy.
  • Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office.
  • Experience in patent application preparation and prosecution in the US and ex-US jurisdictions covering biologics and/or gene therapy inventions.
  • Broad range of patent-related legal expertise, including patent preparation, prosecution, IP due diligence, and strategic counseling.
  • Expertise in IP litigation and regulatory affairs related to market exclusivity.
  • Ability to independently oversee legal matters, manage outside counsel, and work collaboratively with other personnel.
  • Ability to set aggressive deadlines, handle multiple complex legal matters, and see projects through to conclusion.
  • Recognized external expert in a strategic job function.
  • Broad and comprehensive expertise in leading-edge theories and techniques within a strategic job function.
  • Applies ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution in complicated and/or novel situations.
  • Influences internal/external business and/or industry issues that have an impact on Neurocrine.
