Position Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a Signals Engineer Supervisor to oversee the management of lane closure protocols. This role involves responding to lane closure requests beyond standard working hours, evaluating major construction project Traffic Management Plans (TMP), updating district lane closure policies, and coordinating project reviews to address work zone conflicts.
Key Responsibilities
- Analysis and Reporting: Interpret and analyze technical engineering data, producing comprehensive reports and actionable recommendations.
- Traffic Signal Systems Management: Maintain and support traffic signal systems, software applications, and IT networks. Ensure the reliability of the central operating system (KITS) for optimizing signal timings and coordinate with system support contractors.
- Project Coordination: Plan and schedule engineering activities to ensure deliverables are met within established timelines.
- Operations Engineering: Assist in developing policies for effective management of the arterial transportation network and support in-house assessments for traffic signal operations.
- Lane Closure Oversight: Analyze traffic data to recommend lane closure hours, coordinate with stakeholders to ensure compliance with policies, and evaluate extended lane closure requests.
- Effective Communication: Engage with internal and external stakeholders, preparing technical documents, reports, and presentations as needed.
- Team Leadership: Supervise a team of engineers and technicians, providing guidance and promoting professional development.
- Compliance Assurance: Ensure all engineering projects adhere to VDOT, state, and federal regulations.
- Agency Representation: Represent the agency in discussions with citizens, local governments, and the business community.
- Special Projects: Undertake additional engineering assignments as required.
- Project Management: Participate in district project meetings, providing insights on lane closure hours and TMPs.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Strong communication skills for conveying technical information.
- Experience in developing and reviewing construction maintenance of traffic (MOT) and transportation management plans (TMP).
- Supervisory experience in a transportation planning context.
- Engineering degree or relevant experience in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
Additional Information
This position requires a valid driver's license and may involve emergency response duties, including working outside regular hours. A background check will be conducted as part of the hiring process.
