CHILD TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Prior experience in commercial driving and engaging with children is preferred for the Child Transportation Specialist role.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The candidate must possess a clean driving record and hold a valid Class "C" Commercial Operator's License issued by the State of South Dakota, which includes a School Bus Endorsement for transporting passengers.

The individual should establish a positive rapport with children, collaborate effectively with Head Start personnel, parents, and volunteers, demonstrate commitment to the principles of the Head Start Program, and uphold confidentiality at all times.

All applicants must successfully complete a background check and a driving record assessment through the National Driver Register prior to employment.


UNACCEPTABLE APPLICANT CRITERIA:
Applicants with a felony conviction, any DUI (driving under the influence), or any history of child abuse/neglect will not be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The candidate must be capable of lifting 30 lbs. and occasionally heavier items. An ICC physical examination and a physician's statement are required as mandated by state law.

WORK SCHEDULE:
The individual is expected to adhere to the contract in alignment with the annual calendar.

SUPERVISION:
The Child Transportation Specialist will report to the Education Coordinator designated for their area.

EVALUATION:
The Education Coordinator will assess the performance of the Child Transportation Specialist twice in the first year and annually thereafter.

SALARY RANGE AND INCREMENTS:
The starting pay for this position is $14.00 per hour. The specialist will be eligible for salary increments based on the policies and approved salary schedule.

Salary increments will depend on the program's funding level and the individual's experience within the program.


Children and families are prioritized in this Head Start Program, above all defined duties and responsibilities.


POSITION OBJECTIVES:
  1. To ensure the safe transportation of children to and from the Head Start Center.
  2. To maintain children's safety on the bus by utilizing safety belts, establishing guidelines for behavior while riding, and adhering to all safety regulations while driving.
  3. To engage with families in a respectful and friendly manner regarding bus schedule changes and during drop-off and pick-up times, encouraging their involvement in the Head Start Program.
  4. To collaborate with teachers and staff by observing and reporting on children's behavior during transport, assisting in the classroom, and attending all necessary training and meetings.
  5. To keep all records current and submit them promptly.
  6. To pursue personal growth through ongoing education, training opportunities, and feedback from evaluations.

The organization will assist in obtaining a CDL through classes and will cover the testing fees. A minimum of two years of service with Head Start is required once the CDL is acquired.
