Position Overview:

This role entails overseeing the design, construction, testing, and maintenance of data pipelines at scale. You will lead a team focused on modeling and development to support operational initiatives, strategic projects, and innovative products. A robust background in advanced modeling techniques, statistical methods, and complex mathematical tools is essential. Your expertise will guide a team that initiates and executes projects, creating comprehensive solutions that yield business outcomes, including proofs-of-concept for new challenges and production-ready solutions for operational and customer-facing products. You will ensure that solutions facilitate the movement of data and information assets, adhering to API-First and Service-Oriented Architecture principles. Additionally, you will enhance FedEx Ground's capabilities in deploying state-of-the-art data science and machine learning tools across various projects and platforms. Your role will also involve providing expert consultation and strategic guidance to senior management, mentoring team members, and collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve business objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team responsible for software development and data engineering, focusing on the design, development, and maintenance of application software and data pipelines for real-time and batch analysis, ensuring data reliability and quality.
  • Collaborate with various teams within FedEx Ground, including Data Science, Product Management, and Platform Engineering, to deliver impactful solutions for operational and business execution teams.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of UI, API, and data layers that promote data accessibility, working closely with data science and product teams.
  • Ensure compliance with standard processes to maintain reliability, security, and privacy across all application layers.
  • Evaluate and implement best practices, tools, and processes for web-based applications, APIs, and data analysis, particularly with large datasets.
  • Provide post-launch support in partnership with the SRE team to guarantee high availability and performance of applications and products.
  • Manage staffing, financial oversight, and contractual obligations for the engineering team.
  • Coach and mentor team members to drive results and foster collaboration across multiple teams.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Proven expertise in software development for operational domains.
  • Experience in architecting and developing user experiences, RESTful APIs, and data layers.
  • Demonstrated success in designing and implementing large-scale technical solutions that deliver ongoing value.
  • Ability to navigate complex technical challenges and provide support to diverse teams.
  • A design-oriented mindset that embraces ambiguity, coupled with an engineering approach to make informed decisions.
  • Familiarity with analyzing large-scale structured and unstructured data using programming languages such as Scala and Python.
  • Experience with Big Data technologies like Spark and Kafka, along with a solid understanding of standard processes.
  • Development experience in cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and tools.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly.
  • Capacity to define complex problems, identify solutions, and influence stakeholders effectively.
Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a quantitative field such as Mathematics or Engineering, along with seven years of relevant experience in measurement, analysis, and predictive analytics. Extensive knowledge of data engineering and machine learning frameworks, as well as a strong understanding of the transportation industry and evolving technologies, is essential. A related advanced degree may substitute for some experience requirements.
