Position Overview

The Personal Lines Underwriter is responsible for generating new personal business by assessing and determining the acceptance or rejection of personal insurance risks in accordance with Hastings Mutual's product and coverage standards. This role also involves maintaining written personal business to ensure both profitability and growth.

Position Location & Work Format

This position is based in our Hastings, Michigan offices, operating in a hybrid work format that combines remote and in-office work. We are open to considering candidates residing outside the Hastings area for a fully remote arrangement. The standard working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, approves, and processes personal lines applications and endorsements in line with departmental service standards, ensuring compliance with underwriting guidelines to meet corporate premium and profitability goals.
  • Engages in professional communication and negotiation with the agency network, fostering relationships with assigned agencies to achieve corporate objectives.
  • Reviews and processes renewal policies to confirm that risks meet Hastings Mutual's eligibility criteria and are accurately rated.
  • Continuously updates knowledge of new products and developments within the insurance sector.
  • Contributes to corporate projects as assigned.
  • Actively participates in professional development activities, such as continuing education or self-improvement initiatives.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by management, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED is required, or equivalent work experience.
    • An Associate's degree or higher is preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in personal lines insurance is preferred.
  • Completion of the Associates in Personal Underwriting (API) designation is preferred.
  • A solid understanding of all Personal Lines products, pricing structures, and coverage options is essential.
  • Ability to interpret and demonstrate understanding of authority levels, guidelines, and additional underwriting resources to achieve quality metrics.
  • Proficient PC skills, including strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are required.
