The Infant Nutrition Preparation Specialist is responsible for ensuring the precise and efficient preparation of breast milk, donor milk, and infant formulas.

Working under the guidance of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Dietitian, this role involves coordinating all daily operations within the milk preparation area.

The specialist will oversee the calculation, preparation, and distribution of feeding orders.

Compliance with all network and departmental policies and regulations governing the operation of the milk preparation area is essential.


Responsibilities:

  • Accurately calculates, prepares, and dispenses specified volumes of human milk, formula, and additives as directed.
  • Employs proper techniques for measuring both liquids and solids.
  • Adheres to established procedures and recipes for human milk and formula preparation.
  • Labels prepared human milk and formula bottles appropriately.
  • Receives and documents the storage of breast milk accurately.
  • Collects human milk from designated storage units.
  • Implements FIFO (First In, First Out) methods for breast milk storage unless directed otherwise by the Dietitian or Lactation Consultant.
  • Compiles daily feeding orders for each infant and generates accurate labels for each feeding.
  • Calculates the necessary amounts of fresh and frozen human milk for a 12-hour period for each infant.
  • Delivers prepared feedings to the specified locations.
  • Conducts inventory checks of lab supplies, formulas, and enteral feeding equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains appropriate par levels and monitors expiration dates of products and formulas.
  • Oversees the inventory of donor milk.
  • Follows aseptic techniques and infection control policies, including compliance with OSHA and HAACP standards for formula and human milk preparation.
  • Keeps the work area clean and organized.
  • Ensures that all equipment is functioning properly and addresses any issues promptly.
  • Monitors recipes, preparation processes, and labeling for accuracy.
  • Engages with mothers regarding milk volume as needed and communicates any abnormal findings to the Dietitian or Lactation Consultant.
  • Collaborates with nursing and medical staff regarding any discrepancies in feeding orders, storage, or administration.
  • May conduct training sessions and assist in the orientation of new staff.
  • May contribute to the development and assessment of outcomes for the NICU, including quality assurance initiatives.
  • Maintains proficiency in required skills and stays updated with current knowledge in the field through ongoing training.
  • Performs additional job-related duties as assigned.
  • Adheres to the standards outlined in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies.

Associate's degree in nutrition, food service, or a related discipline. 6-12 months of clinical experience. Familiarity with the EPIC clinical system.
