Special Education Assistant

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at Gwinnett County Public Schools. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting the instructional program within an assigned classroom, providing assistance to special needs students, and implementing plans for instruction.
Responsibilities:- Provide support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom, including assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students.
- Implement plans for instruction, monitor student behavior during non-classroom time, and provide information to appropriate school personnel.
- Assist in adapting classroom activities, assignments, and materials to support IEP objectives and provide opportunities for all special education students to participate in classroom activities.
- Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a healthcare professional.
- Assist students with disabilities with grooming, community accessibility, and other assigned tasks.
- Confer with teachers on a regular basis to assist in evaluating special education student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
- Implement and collect data under the supervision of assigned teachers and behavioral plans designed by IEP teams.
- Monitor special education students in various settings, including the classroom, field trips, and community skills.
- Perform record-keeping and support functions, including data collection, student files, and attendance.
- Provide instruction to students in individual and group activities, reinforcing instructional objectives and implementing IEP plans.
- Respond to emergency situations, including physical de-escalation procedures with necessary training.
- Assist with monitoring duties, including hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, and bus duty as assigned.
- Paraprofessional Educator certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) required.
- High school diploma or equivalent and passed the Praxis Parapro Assessment (prior to March 1, 2007) or the GACE Parapro Assessment required.
- Experience in a licensed child care environment preferred.
- Knowledge of child development, Microsoft Office Suite, effective interpersonal skills, and ability to act as a representative of Gwinnett County Public Schools.
The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, feel, have significant finger dexterity, and/or reach. The employee is required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
