Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Cyber Security Engineer 3 to join our team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. As a key member of our cybersecurity team, you will be responsible for identifying mission challenges and formulating engineering solutions to support cyber operations activities and systems.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement cybersecurity solutions to protect against current and emerging threats.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate hardware, software, and other components to solve operational challenges for cyber defenders.
  • Perform data and network engineering functions to support cyber operations activities and systems.
  • Apply good design and problem-solving skills to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks.
  • Initiate personal direction and goals to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Demonstrate outstanding verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate project status and challenges.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in a collaborative environment and interface with clients and laboratory staff.
  • May interface with external entities including law enforcement, intelligence, and other government organizations and agencies.
  • Be passionate and self-motivated with good time management skills to meet project deadlines.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
    • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
    • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Familiarity with telecommunications and IT systems.
    • Knowledge of optical and IP networks.
    • Experience with systems integration, test and evaluation, installation and acceptance testing, and in-operation test and evaluation.
    • Understanding of current cybersecurity vulnerabilities and operational landscape.
    • Familiarity in design, development, and implementation of countermeasures, cybersecurity systems integration, and manages tools specific to cybersecurity operations.
    • Familiarity with: RF, fiber optic, Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET), Course and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM/DWDM), Optical Mesh and Reconfigurable Optical Add / Drop Multiplexers (ROADM), Frame Relay, ATM, Ethernet, Internet Protocol Routing and Switching, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), computing (Windows, Linux), storage, cloud (private/public).
    • Experience in developing and presenting material to communicate project status and challenges.
    • Demonstrate interpersonal skills and the ability to interface with clients and laboratory staff.
    • Active TS or Q security clearance and the ability to maintain such a clearance.

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
  • Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the candidate selected is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).

Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months can be demonstrated.
