Position Overview

The Mechanical Project Engineer plays a crucial role within the Mechanical Systems Group, which is part of the Facilities Engineering and Campus Energy Department. This position reports directly to the Director of the Mechanical Systems Group. The responsibilities may encompass the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical systems across various campus buildings.

The Mechanical Project Engineer serves as the primary authority on mechanical systems for a designated group of campus buildings, which includes approximately 40 structures of diverse functions. The engineer is expected to possess comprehensive knowledge of HVAC systems, their operational sequences, equipment conditions, service locations, and sources of thermal and electrical power. Familiarity with plumbing, fire protection, and laboratory systems is also essential, alongside a general understanding of all campus facilities.

This role is anchored in the core values of the Facilities Organization: teamwork, innovation, integrity, inclusiveness, respect, and sustainability. The Mechanical Project Engineer collaborates with administrative leadership to support campus initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Project Management: Analyze technical options to resolve building system challenges. Engage with maintenance teams, contractors, and consultants to explore solutions.
  • Act as the Technical Representative for new construction and renovation projects overseen by the Office of Capital Projects, ensuring compliance with design standards and quality of construction.
  • Assess tenant needs for modifications to existing systems and lead design efforts based on project complexity.
  • Conduct evaluations of current mechanical systems to ensure efficient operation, contributing to sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Investigate and resolve building system issues, developing projects to rectify deficiencies.
  • Provide technical support for permits and inspections as required.
  • Research new mechanical products and systems for potential application within campus facilities.
  • Assist academic researchers with the configuration and installation of laboratory equipment.
  • Implement safe construction practices and understand the requirements for large campus thermal distribution systems.

Maintenance Responsibilities:

  • Ensure occupant safety and comfort while optimizing energy efficiency, collaborating with the Maintenance Department and Environmental Health & Safety.
  • Offer technical guidance on renovations, repairs, and capital projects.
  • Work with energy management teams to assess system performance and energy consumption, applying commissioning procedures for data analysis.

Administrative Duties:

  • Oversee mechanical projects, managing scope, schedule, quality, and budget considerations.
  • Update and maintain the Design Standards Manual for HVAC systems and related infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant experience.
  • Field experience is advantageous.
  • Strong background in HVAC design and construction.
  • Proficient in engineering economics, construction safety, and project management.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to navigate construction sites safely.
  • Willingness to work during non-standard hours as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with HVAC building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of ground source heat pump design.
  • Proficiency in building energy modeling software.
  • Professional Engineering License or Engineer-in-Training certification in New Jersey.
  • Advanced coursework in business or engineering.
  • Experience in steam system design.
  • LEED certification.
  • Project management certification.
