About the Department:
The School of Nursing has a long-standing tradition of equipping students for diverse roles in healthcare, including clinical practice, education, research, and administration. About the Position:
As a faculty member, you will play a crucial role in fulfilling the mission of the School of Nursing through innovative teaching, impactful research, and dedicated service.
Responsibilities:
- Deliver instruction across various nursing courses;
- Guide graduate and doctoral students in their research endeavors;
- Participate in academic and professional service that supports the School's objectives;
- Engage in faculty governance activities;
- Establish and maintain an independent research program with external funding;
- Publish high-quality, peer-reviewed research;
- Collaborate across disciplines.
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD (or equivalent research doctorate) in nursing or a related field from an accredited institution;
- Proven ability to teach effectively at both undergraduate and graduate levels;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
- Postdoctoral training or relevant academic teaching experience;
- A defined research agenda with potential for external funding;
- A record of peer-reviewed publications;
- Experience as a registered nurse in various healthcare settings;
- Experience in mentoring nursing students and professionals;
- Eligibility for nursing licensure in Virginia or a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Advanced Nursing Practice: Comprehensive understanding of nursing principles and practices, including current healthcare policies and ethics;
- Research Methods: Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative methodologies relevant to nursing research;
- Education Techniques: Knowledge of curriculum development and pedagogical strategies for nursing education;
- Teaching: Ability to effectively facilitate learning and assess student performance across various formats;
- Research: Skills in designing and conducting research, including grant writing;
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills for engaging with students and colleagues;
- Leadership and Collaboration: Ability to lead initiatives and work collaboratively within the academic community;
- Adaptability: Flexibility in teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles;
- Critical Thinking: Strong analytical skills for both teaching and research;
- Problem Solving: Competence in addressing academic and administrative challenges;

Preferred Qualifications:
- Postdoctoral training or experience as an adjunct or full-time faculty member;
- Experience in writing academic grant proposals;
- Specialization in acute care, medical/surgical, or mental health nursing.
