The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to maintain systematic and frequent contact with advisees.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Advise students on academic requirements and course selection
  • Disseminate information on institutional policies and procedures
  • Review and interpret placement and standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites
  • Perform and interpret degree audits
  • Identify options for students to satisfy degree requirements and assist in completion
  • Monitor student registration activities and recommend solutions to academic difficulties
  • Maintain accurate records of interactions with students
  • Be a student advocate when appropriate
  • Serve as liaison and foster intentional relationships with other advisors, offices, colleges, and departments
  • Refer students to specialized staff for issues such as comprehensive counseling, financial assistance, and study abroad
  • Participate in orientations for first-time college students and transfer students
  • Stay abreast of changing institutional information, including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, and state and federal mandates
  • Engage in professional development activities, including memberships in professional organizations and attendance at conferences and workshops
  • Participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the academic advisement program's goals and objectives
  • Participate in institutional student development and retention programs
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and staff
  • Develop advising materials and presentations to support individual and group student sessions
  • Demonstrate respect for all individuals
