Established in 1977, we have evolved into a vital educational hub, assisting over 14,000 families in Chicago annually.
Role Summary
The Income Support Specialist will report directly to the Director of Career Pathways and Income Supports Program. This role is crucial in delivering education, guidance, and case management to assist low-income, limited English-speaking immigrant community members in accessing a wide array of public benefits and related services. The Specialist will evaluate each individual or family to determine their eligibility for public aid benefits and other social services. They will connect participants with various agencies to ensure they receive the necessary support to address their immediate needs. Follow-up services will be provided to ensure that benefits applied for are received, acting as a liaison with relevant agencies to resolve individual cases.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct intake assessments with community members seeking assistance.
- Provide guidance to eligible immigrants and refugees navigating available resources.
- Perform thorough eligibility screenings for public benefits, emergency cash assistance, utility services, and rental assistance.
- Assist applicants in completing applications for various public benefits, including Medicaid, All Kids, SNAP, and others.
- Advise participants on available benefits from public and private sources tailored to their unique situations.
- Offer interpretation and translation services for critical documents between English and Spanish.
- Maintain communication with clients regarding missing documentation for application submissions.
- Act as an advocate for participants with relevant agencies to facilitate understanding of eligibility criteria and resolve issues.
- Provide information and referrals to community members for additional support services.
- Keep detailed records of each client's application and enrollment processes.
- Document services provided and maintain accurate case notes in the appropriate data tracking systems.
- Generate and submit timely reports to funders.
- Ensure participant files are organized and compliant with funder policies.
- Build and maintain relationships with local benefits agencies and other resource organizations.
- Stay updated on changes in benefits eligibility guidelines affecting community members.
- Participate in meetings with funders and stakeholders as required.
- Engage in team development and organizational activities.
- Safeguard client confidentiality and maintain secure record-keeping.
- Facilitate program orientation sessions as needed.
- Participate in community outreach and maintain a flexible schedule for events.
- Travel as necessary to meet with program participants or attend appointments.
- Support clients from diverse backgrounds in accessing necessary resources.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the program supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English is essential for effective communication.
- Preferred qualifications include an Associate's degree or 2-3 years of relevant experience.
- Ability to build trust and work effectively with immigrant populations.
