Position Overview

SAIC is in search of a motivated Electrical Engineer to contribute to innovative projects supporting the U.S. Navy.

ROLE SUMMARY:

The selected candidate will engage in the development of advanced battery technologies, specifically focusing on Lead Acid, NiZn, and Lithium battery systems utilized in Next Generation Submarine Battery (NGSB) Cells and Pressure Rescue Module (PRM) Cells. The NGSB Cells are characterized by capacities of 500 Ah and above, forming integral components of larger 2,000 Ah battery systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Government in research and development initiatives, including vendor assessments and troubleshooting existing technical challenges related to Submarine Batteries.
  • Assist in the evaluation of Lithium and other battery chemistries, addressing safety considerations pertinent to Navy applications, particularly for Submarine use. This includes topics such as thermal runaway, outgassing, venting, and arc flash.
  • Participate in battery dissections, applying expertise to identify historical failure modes in various components such as grids, active materials, separators, seals, and electrolytes.
  • Contribute to market research and analysis regarding battery technologies, tracking emerging companies and understanding market dynamics that may influence battery manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provide engineering analysis for NGSB and PRM Cells, offering recommendations to enhance production processes for various battery types including Lead Acid, Lithium-Ion, and NiZn.
  • Perform tasks related to Battery Monitoring Systems (BMS) for NGSB, PRM, Lithium-Ion, NiZn, and Lead Acid Batteries, including:

Maintenance and Repair Actions

Inspection of Next Generation Submarine Batteries and verification of technical manuals

Oversight of manufacturing processes at battery cell production facilities

Communication with Government representatives to secure approval for repair activities

Refurbishment of Battery Modules

  • Assist with Engineering Investigations (EIs) on battery dissections and other related tasks.
  • Support data analysis for Next Generation Submarine Battery development, focusing on Lithium and NiZn Battery Cells.
  • Deliver quality assurance services for vendor-produced NGSB Cells, PRM Cells, and support new production qualification testing, ensuring compliance with quality standards such as ISO 9001:2000 during annual audits.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's Degree with no prior experience required
  • Familiarity with various battery chemistries and energy storage technologies
  • Interim secret clearance required, with the potential for obtaining a Secret Clearance, supported by SAIC
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
