The Green Recruitment Company is partnering with a prominent player in the US energy storage industry to find a Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations.
This organization is a significant energy storage Independent Power Producer (IPP) with over 1GW of battery storage projects currently operational across various regions, including New York, New England, and Texas, and boasts a development pipeline nearing 10GW.
With substantial growth in recent years, the company now employs approximately 100 professionals nationwide.This position calls for an expert in energy markets, possessing a robust background in power marketing, contract origination, and structuring across short, medium, and long-term horizons.
The role also entails leading offtake origination and negotiations, along with a solid grasp of market fundamentals.Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Commercial Strategy: Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the commercial prospects available for storage and storage + assets throughout the United States.
Formulate the overarching commercial strategy for both development and operational assets, ensuring alignment with current and anticipated market demands to optimize revenue while facilitating an effective financing structure.
Collaborate with development and regulatory teams to ensure coherence between the development pipeline and commercialization prospects.Proactively identify opportunities and gaps within the development pipeline to advance commercial prospects that support the organization’s business objectives.
Contract Origination & Structuring: Identify and pursue commercial opportunities (short, medium, and long-term) for both operational and development-stage standalone storage and storage + projects across the United States (including CAISO, ERCOT, ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, SPP, and WECC).
Leverage and expand a robust network of utility and non-utility off-takers to enhance market insights and pinpoint commercial structures and BESS use cases that the organization can introduce to the market.
Develop, market, and negotiate contract structures and opportunities that are acceptable to customers and stakeholders.Lead the deal team to ensure efficient and productive engagement in RFP processes.
Work collaboratively with a comprehensive team to advance thorough risk assessments associated with all commercial opportunities.
Lead negotiations for offtake agreements (including tolls, power purchase agreements (PPAs), hedges, indexed energy storage credits (IESCs), and other commercial contracts).
Align credit markets/requirements/structures with contract frameworks to facilitate transactions under varying constraints.
Partner with the Market Operations team to comprehend operational risks and potential benefits of each contract structure, ensuring seamless transitions into the operational phase.
Present and advocate for contracting opportunities to the Leadership Team and the Investment Committee, offering detailed analyses and strategic recommendations.
Market Fundamentals and Intelligence: Develop and regularly update market outlooks for storage and storage + projects utilizing third-party reports, in-house nodal analytics, power flow models, and other internal information sources; effectively communicate insights to relevant team members.
Consolidate market information across all value chain areas (e.g., development, construction, operations, finance, procurement, etc.) to establish a holistic view of the business, ensuring information is shared with applicable team members.
Conduct a commercial competitive analysis of development projects to support bidding and pipeline management efforts.Establish a company-wide framework for growth strategies and set target goals for an optimal balance of contracted and merchant revenues.
Collaborate with development, regulatory, and market operations teams to align the project pipeline with growth opportunities and strategic positioning.Effectively present and build consensus regarding the commercial strategy, tactics, and recommendations to the company’s team members, board of directors, customers, and key stakeholders.
As a member of the Leadership Team, collaborate with stakeholders (board of managers, executive team, and leadership team) to develop and achieve organizational development objectives.
Perform all other duties as required.Work Experience & Requirements:
A minimum of 15 years of experience in power commercial negotiations, ideally with a focus on energy storage.
Extensive market experience and prior leadership experience in building and managing commercial teams.
A minimum of 2 GW of conceptualized and completed commercial revenue-related transactions.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and motivate personnel at all organizational levels.
Deep understanding of company and project profit and loss, pro forma modeling, NPV/IRR analysis, and financing structures.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with executive presence.
A bachelor's degree is required; an MBA or other advanced degree is a plus.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
Strong organizational development and time-management skills.
