Planning and Zoning Administrator

This position plays a crucial role in administering planning, zoning, and development ordinances, ensuring alignment with the city's objectives and land use goals. The ideal candidate will assist in developing short- and long-term planning projects, updating maps using GIS systems, and coordinating the land development process.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, direct, and supervise department activities, functions, and personnel, including budget preparation, goal development, and staff training.
- Manage the Planning and Zoning Division, overseeing activities such as site development review, building permits, variances, and zoning amendments.
- Act as a technical advisor, providing oral and written presentations on planning, zoning, and development issues to various stakeholders.
- Meet with applicants, interact with citizens, and facilitate mediation between communities and developers on zoning issues.
- Maintain a current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and principles related to planning, zoning, and community development.
- Supervise the receipt and review of applications for rezoning, special land use permits, variances, and development plans.
- Issue accurate zoning verifications and facilitate Board Committee meetings.
- Coordinate with Code Compliance Officers and licenses and permits coordinators on city zoning administration issues.
- Process applications for zoning proposals, review plats and plans, and conduct site visits.
- Maintain annual statistics on land use, housing, and new development.
- Coordinate zoning verification and certification, and interpret ordinances related to zoning and development.
- Bachelor's degree in Planning, Public Administration, Economic Development, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
- Seven or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in Planning, Economic Development, or a related field.
- Knowledge of management and supervisory practices, fiscal management, grant procedures, and GIS software applications.
- Ability to develop and oversee budgets, facilitate public input processes, and mediate disputes.
- Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred.
The incumbent works in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
