Position Overview

Classroom educators are responsible for developing a dynamic and nurturing educational framework that promotes learning and personal development. The instructor delivers lessons tailored to the appropriate grade level while fostering a positive relationship with students, parents, and colleagues. Teachers inspire students to cultivate the skills, attitudes, and knowledge essential for a solid educational foundation. The educator is accountable to and assessed by the school principal.

This role necessitates a valid educator certification from Alaska. The number of working days is determined by the negotiated pay structure. Details regarding the pay scale are accessible online. The specific grade level, subject matter taught, and work location may vary based on student enrollment and district staffing requirements. Positions ranging from 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are linked to the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), while those from 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions at 0.39 FTE or lower do not qualify for state retirement benefits.

Job Qualifications
The following qualifications are mandatory: A valid initial, professional, or master teaching certificate from Alaska. Demonstrated subject matter expertise evidenced by: a degree in the relevant content area; a minor in the relevant content area; passing scores on Praxis Subject Assessments (formerly Praxis II) in the relevant content area; or an endorsement in the relevant content area. The responsibilities outlined below represent the essential functions of this position. The successful candidate: Can articulate their educational philosophy and illustrate its connection to their teaching practice. Understands student learning and development, applying that knowledge effectively. Establishes and upholds standards of student behavior to foster an effective learning environment. Organizes class time to provide a balanced mix of instruction, demonstration, practice, and assessment. Guides the learning process towards achieving curriculum objectives and establishes clear goals for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students. Teaches students with consideration for their individual and cultural backgrounds. Possesses in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and effective teaching strategies. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials, providing individualized and small group instruction to tailor the curriculum to student needs. Translates lesson plans into age-appropriate learning experiences. Utilizes current technology to enhance instruction and for record-keeping and research purposes. Applies knowledge of contemporary research and theory to the instructional program. Facilitates, monitors, and evaluates student learning. Assesses students' academic and social development, maintains accurate records, and prepares progress reports. Identifies student needs and makes appropriate referrals, developing strategies for individualized education plans. Creates and sustains a learning environment where all students are actively engaged and valued contributors. Provides individualized and small group instruction to meet diverse student needs. Designs a classroom atmosphere conducive to learning, reflecting the maturity and interests of the students. Establishes an engaging learning environment through functional displays, interest centers, and showcases of student work. Oversees the classroom environment, students, and volunteers. Collaborates with parents, families, and the community. Maintains regular communication with parents through newsletters, notes, phone calls, and conferences. Engages in professional development and contributes to the teaching community. Physical and Mental Requirements
The physical demands of this role include frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and listening. Specific visual capabilities are also necessary. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to comprehend vague and implicit instructions, recall facts and details readily, manage conflicts, and make sound decisions under pressure. The employee must effectively handle the stress associated with working with students, parents, and colleagues from diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic environment.
