Duty Hours and Location Assignment

As a key member of our team, you will be expected to arrive at work at the designated time and location for your assigned position. Work hours typically occur between 7:30am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional coverage outside of core hours, including weekends and holidays on a rotational basis. Weekend and holiday hours usually range from 7:30am to 12:30pm.

Duty hours and location assignments may be modified at the discretion of the Program Management Staff or at the request of the client with or without prior notice. This is a full-time position that requires attendance during emergency situations, such as inclement weather, mechanical or facility failures, or other scheduled or unscheduled institutional closures as directed by Program or client management.

This position will support multiple worksites in the Hampton Roads area, including locations in Norfolk and Newport News, VA, and any other locations designated or required by the client or SoBran. Some travel may be associated with this position, which will be determined as needs arise.

Job Responsibilities

The Attending Veterinarian/Clinical Veterinarian II (AV/CV) ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures. They participate in and direct the application of veterinary care and medical oversight for the animal colony and multiple sites, including preventative medicine, health surveillance, medical treatment, research support, anesthesia, survival and non-survival surgical manipulations, and the use of biological, radiological, and chemical hazards and animal transfers within and between institutions.

This position includes Attending Veterinarian duties with two different contracts, as well as alternate AV duties at another contract. The AV/CV will work closely with the Project/Program Manager and/or Facility Manager(s) and maintain a relationship with all staff. They are expected to be forward-thinking and create and assist in developing plans to enhance the learning abilities and performance of the staff working on these contracts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Understand and follow all SOPs and Quality Assurance Standards
  • Provide veterinary care consistent with state and federal law, as well as institutional practices, guidelines, and policies
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use facilities
  • Serve on multiple IACUC committees, attend IACUC meetings, and assist with protocol development, prereview, and review
  • Provide regular and timely monitoring and evaluation of all animal species
  • Recommend, direct, and apply appropriate corrective measures to maintain colony health or in response to adverse complications resulting from unanticipated medical conditions or research manipulations
  • Direct the application of therapeutic treatment, including the initiation, administration, alteration, and termination of treatment regimens
  • Follow and direct the application of all institutional preventive medicine, quarantine, conditioning, and isolation procedures
  • Assist in the development and application of animal health surveillance and environmental sanitation programs
  • Perform routine, emergency, and research-related surgical manipulations and sample collections
  • Participate in animal study proposal review and procedure scheduling
  • Participate in new investigator orientation programs
  • Assist with staff training and skill evaluation
  • Participate in required trainings and continuing educational activities to maintain certification and licensure requirements
  • Communicate with various parties, including SoBran staff, other veterinarians, investigative staff, and other internal and external contacts
  • Provide scheduled and emergency after-hours veterinary care as required
  • Participate in weekend and holiday veterinary care assignments and duty rotations
Requirements

A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree (DVM/VMD) from an accredited program is required. If the degree was not attained in the U.S., a certificate (ECFVG or similar) of equivalent training accepted by the American Veterinary Medical Association is required. Completion of an accredited training program in Laboratory Animal Medicine or a minimum of 6 years of equivalent experience is also required. American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board certification is preferred.

Candidate must hold a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia or a reciprocal state within the U.S. Candidate preferred to hold a current Diplomate certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or be eligible to sit for and successfully complete the board examination within 2 years of appointment to the position. DEA and VA Board of Pharmacy license will be required.

3-6 years of experience as a Clinical Veterinarian in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species, including non-human primates, swine, and rodents, is required.
