Position: Marine Fiberglass Technician

Summary:

RMK Merrill-Stevens, a renowned shipyard in Florida, is seeking a skilled Marine Fiberglass Technician to join our team. This role is crucial as we undergo significant renovations, and the work performed must adhere to the highest international standards, ensuring compliance with the requirements of Classification Societies such as ABS, Lloyds, and the US Coast Guard.

As a vital member of our fiberglass division, you will be expected to possess extensive knowledge in mold fabrication, lamination, lay-up processes, and the production of custom parts, alongside general fiberglass repair techniques. Your primary responsibilities will include addressing cosmetic imperfections and substantial damages to fiberglass structures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Detect and assess defects, including cracks, blisters, stress fractures, and aesthetic imperfections.
  • Estimate repair durations, organize material requirements, and coordinate tasks with management.
  • Utilize appropriate power and hand tools to grind out defective areas and smooth rough surfaces.
  • Prepare fiberglass, resins, and damaged sections for effective repair.
  • Shape and refine edges to ensure proper contour matching.
  • Mix gel coat catalyst and apply it to repaired surfaces, ensuring color matching.
  • Buff and polish repaired areas to restore their original appearance.
  • Be prepared for overtime, including nights and weekends, as customer service demands may vary.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED is mandatory.
  • Vocational or Technical school training is highly preferred.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in the marine industry is required.
  • Marine certification is advantageous but not essential.

  • Capable of working independently and making informed decisions.
  • Recognizes personal limitations and seeks assistance when necessary.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as stooping, crouching, pulling, pushing, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs while working around moving machinery.
