The Surgical Technologist I is a vital member of the operating room team at UNC Health, working under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This role requires expertise in sterile and aseptic technique, as well as knowledge of human anatomy and surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Perform technical skills duties in all operating room specialty service areas, adhering to accepted standards of process.
- Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
- Follow aseptic technique, identifying and addressing contamination and/or breaks in technique.
- Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies.
- Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes to ensure optimal accessibility during procedures.
- Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
- Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
- Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment.
- Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
- Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and preceptor as needed.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Military Training Program in Surgical Technology
- 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech may be substituted for formal education/training
- Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
- Strong communication skills/customer service relations
- Excellent organizational/priority setting skills
This is a full-time position with a standard schedule of 36 hours per week, with variable shifts and call hours required, including weekday evenings and weekends. The operating room environment is fast-paced and requires attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a team.
