ROLE SUMMARY:

This role involves the coordination, assessment, and instruction of ASL classes within the TLC community. We operate two educational institutions serving deaf and hard of hearing students in a bilingual/bicultural environment, both in day and residential formats. Our community services aim to dismantle systemic barriers and enhance accessibility for deaf individuals and their families. The successful execution of this role will enrich the understanding and appreciation of ASL and Deaf Culture, addressing language deprivation among deaf and hard of hearing youth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee class instructors and manage their schedules efficiently using the designated scheduling platform.
  • Collaborate with the TLC Advancement Office to address marketing and communication needs.
  • Evaluate the ASL needs of various audiences, including community members, families, and staff.
  • Conduct assessments, ratings, and observations.
  • Work with the Equity and Inclusion Office to facilitate mentoring, tutoring, and additional support for language development.
  • Engage in collaborative initiatives to enhance language training within TLC and with external partners.
  • Participate in professional development and in-service training as required.
  • Instruct ASL classes for at least 50% of scheduled hours.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Department Supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five years of experience teaching ASL or a bachelor's degree in American Sign Language, Deaf Education, ASL Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in American Sign Language is essential.
  • Willingness to achieve a Superior or Superior Plus rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or a score of ASLPI 4 or higher within one year.
  • Formal training in Sign Naturally or True+Way ASL Curriculum, or demonstrated ability to teach ASL using these curricula.
  • Strong proficiency in computer and office applications, particularly G Suite/Google.
  • Excellent written English communication skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects effectively.
