Job Overview

DeKalb Brilliance Academy seeks a Real-World Project Coach to empower students to achieve their full potential. As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with students, teachers, and community experts to design and implement semester-long projects that foster social-emotional learning, leadership development, and academic excellence.

About the Role

This is a volunteer opportunity that requires a commitment of at least 2 hours per month for 5 months (September to December). You will work closely with a classroom teacher to ensure a smooth project launch, provide coaching and feedback to student teams, and participate in celebration events to recognize student achievements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with students and teachers to design and implement real-world projects that align with high-demand careers and promote critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to student teams on project progress, promoting teamwork, communication, and time management skills.
  • Participate in celebration events to recognize student achievements and reflect on the impact of the project.
Requirements

To succeed in this role, you should have:

  • Expertise in a field related to one of our priority projects (urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, environmental science, or healthcare).
  • A deep reverence for the brilliance of our children and an unwavering commitment to empowering them to have impactful legacies in our communities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with peers and manage up to improve the work of everyone around you.
  • The ability to care for yourself, collaborate with others, use tools to regulate your emotions under stress, and approach difficult situations with empathy and compassion.
  • An understanding of how specific behaviors, laws, and institutions limit the rights and freedoms of people and a willingness to work with our community to take collective action to make our world fairer for everyone.

  • Training on giving feedback to children.
  • Pre-created projects, feedback rubrics, and coaching session guides.
  • Pre-launch planning meetings with classroom teachers to ensure you feel prepared.
  • Coaching de-brief meetings after each student coaching session to reflect on your experience and improve future sessions.
  • $500 stipend to support your involvement.
Estimated Salary

$50,000 - $60,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
