CLASS TITLE: Specialized Educational Support Assistant



OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:
Under the general supervision of the school principal and direct oversight of a certified Special Education instructor, this position plays a crucial role in assisting the educational development of students with disabilities. The assistant is responsible for a variety of supportive tasks that enhance the learning experience for these students.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates with Special Education teachers in both elementary and secondary settings to reinforce educational strategies for students with diverse disabilities, including but not limited to physical, visual, auditory, learning, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive challenges, in alignment with each student's Individual Education Program (IEP). Responsibilities include:
  • Assisting in the physical positioning and mobility of non-ambulatory students throughout the school day as per instructional guidelines.
  • Providing individualized tutoring to reinforce academic concepts.
  • Offering personal hygiene assistance to students with significant disabilities, including toileting and changing.
  • Supporting students with orthopedic challenges by adjusting and managing classroom tools and equipment.
  • Guiding students in daily living skills necessary for independent functioning.
  • Accompanying students to various activities, including swimming and medical appointments, to provide necessary support.
  • Assisting with feeding and note-taking for students who require additional help.
  • Maintaining accurate records of student behavior and academic progress.
  • Participating in field trips alongside students and teachers.
  • Engaging in professional development opportunities to enhance job-related skills.



ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
May involve implementing behavioral management techniques for students exhibiting challenging behaviors, administering CPR as needed, and operating classroom technology and equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: An Associate's degree from an accredited institution or completion of at least sixty (60) semester hours of college coursework, including a course focused on the characteristics of severe disabilities, or successful completion of a state-approved paraprofessional assessment, combined with a minimum of one year of experience working with children with disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive understanding of the needs of students with various disabilities, proficiency in English grammar and mathematics, and the ability to follow detailed instructions.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with proficiency in operating educational technology, are highly desirable.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Medium Work:

Ability to exert up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds constantly to move objects. Physical requirements include reaching, handling, and manipulating objects, as well as effective communication abilities.
