CLASS TITLE: Specialized Educational Support Assistant
OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:
Under the guidance of the school principal and the direct supervision of a certified Special Education teacher, this position plays a crucial role in supporting the educational needs of students with disabilities. The assistant aids in the delivery of instruction and performs various related responsibilities as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates with Special Education teachers in both elementary and secondary educational settings to reinforce learning for students with diverse disabilities, including but not limited to physical, visual, and auditory impairments, as well as learning and behavioral challenges, in alignment with each student's Individual Education Program (IEP). Responsibilities include:
- Assisting in the physical positioning and mobility of non-ambulatory students as directed.
- Providing individualized tutoring to enhance comprehension of learning materials.
- Supporting personal hygiene needs for students with significant disabilities, including assistance with toileting and changing.
- Facilitating the use of specialized tools and equipment for students with orthopedic challenges.
- Guiding students in acquiring daily living skills necessary for independence and self-sufficiency.
- Accompanying students to various activities, including swimming and medical appointments, to provide necessary support.
- Assisting with feeding and note-taking for students requiring additional help.
- Maintaining records of student behavior and academic progress.
- Participating in field trips alongside students and educators.
- Engaging in professional development opportunities to enhance job-related skills.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
May involve implementing behavior management techniques for students exhibiting challenging behaviors, administering CPR when necessary, and operating classroom technology and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Certification Requirements: A valid TASN (NCLB) paraprofessional license from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) is required, which can be obtained after completing at least 60 semester hours of college coursework or passing a paraprofessional exam.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: A solid understanding of the characteristics of students with various disabilities, proficiency in English grammar and basic mathematics, and the ability to follow instructions effectively.
Good communication skills, both oral and written, are essential, along with the capability to operate classroom technology.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Medium Work:
Involves exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical requirements include the ability to reach, handle, and manipulate objects; effective communication abilities; and visual acuity for various tasks.
