Lambertville, New Jersey, United States CFG Health Network Full time

Position Overview:

Role: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Employment Type: Per Diem

Compensation: $40 per hour

Facility: Mercer County Jail

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for providing comprehensive care to inmate patients by employing nursing assessment protocols throughout the stages of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation, in alignment with established care philosophies. The LPN collaborates closely with Registered Nurses to ensure the delivery of effective patient care and the attainment of optimal health outcomes. They maintain professional nursing standards while interacting with patients.

Correctional Nursing involves delivering care to inmate patients aimed at enhancing their overall health through the nursing process, which includes triage, professional training, and the utilization of various resources in accordance with regulatory standards and established guidelines. Given that many inmate patients may have had limited access to healthcare prior to incarceration, this role presents a unique opportunity to address a diverse range of health issues, from minor conditions to complex and atypical cases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and document medical evaluations of inmate patients within the assigned correctional facility, adhering to the standards set by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC), NJ 10-A, American Correctional Association (ACA), and Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS).
  • Perform thorough assessments of inmate patients across various settings within the institution, including initial intake areas, healthcare units for the ill, emergency situations in housing units, chronic care clinics, and medical units.
  • Collaborate with primary care providers and other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity, timeliness, and appropriateness of care for inmate patients.
  • Ensure that medical record documentation is maintained in SOAP format, is problem-oriented, and aligns with therapeutic orders.
  • Record all care information clearly, concisely, accurately, and completely, in the appropriate format and on the correct forms, in a timely manner.
  • Report any reactions to treatments and medications, as well as changes in the inmate's emotional or physical condition.
  • Provide patient education and assist with discharge planning.
  • Foster a therapeutic environment, ensuring that inmates are treated with professionalism, ethics, and tact.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on the specific setting.
  • Participate in scheduled in-service programs and staff meetings.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Possession of a current, unrestricted license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of employment.

Experience:

  • A minimum of one year of experience as an LPN.
  • Experience in a correctional healthcare environment is preferred.

Required Skills:

  • Strong critical thinking and assessment abilities.
  • Capability to make independent decisions.
  • Assertive, empathetic, and capable of providing objective care.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and customer service skills.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with Electronic Health Records.
  • Able to earn the respect and confidence of both inmates and staff, with a commitment to the facility's objectives.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification with demonstrated skills.

Functional Demands:

  • Ability to pass all required health and screening tests.
  • Willingness to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Availability for on-call duty as required by the site.

Organizational Expectations:

  • Represent CFG Health Systems, LLC positively and professionally.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information and respect patients' rights to privacy.
  • Promote a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention practices.
  • Stay informed of current standards of practice, trends, and developments relevant to the role.
  • Adhere to infection control policies, medication administration protocols, and controlled substance regulations.
  • Engage in ongoing quality improvement initiatives.
  • Complete all required orientation and training directed by the facility.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Maintain security clearance for the assigned facility.
  • Utilize appropriate communication channels with supervising staff.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this role. Reasonable accommodations may be made upon written request to the supervisor for individuals with disabilities.

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, walk, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, or stretch for extended periods.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and comprehend written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
