Overview:

We are in search of a Principal Firmware Engineer/Architect specializing in firmware development and design architecture, with a strong emphasis on FPGA/Xilinx technology.

Key Qualifications:

  • Proficient in developing advanced instrument control software using Python and/or C, C++.
  • Extensive experience with FPGA, TI DSP, Xilinx Spartan, Zynq Ultrascale+, Vivado, and Vitis.
  • Deep understanding of Python's capabilities and limitations, with a commitment to creating a robust and maintainable codebase.
  • Recognized as a reliable architect among peers, demonstrating technical excellence and a passion for high-quality software development.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative, eager to explore new areas and implement effective solutions.

Desired Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree with at least 8 years of experience in software development and architectural design.
  • Hands-on expertise in Python, C, and C++ for control systems associated with instrumentation.
  • Experience in the architecture and system design of next-generation instruments.
  • Long-term maintenance and evolution of instrument codebases.
  • Practical experience in embedded firmware design, architecture, and development involving various analog and digital I/O, FPGA, DSP, and microcontrollers.
  • Familiarity with hardware description languages such as Verilog and VHDL.
  • Strong knowledge of communication protocols including SPI, I2C, Ethernet, and RS232.
  • Experience with narrowband and broadband lasers is advantageous.
  • Understanding of material physics and gas analysis is a plus.

  • Collaborate with scientists to implement effective processing strategies for experimental hardware setups.
  • Design and develop embedded systems that align with strategic business objectives and exceed client expectations.
  • Adhere to industry-standard design, development, and testing methodologies.
  • Promote best-in-class software development practices and design methodologies for new products.
  • Work collaboratively with R&D and engineering teams throughout all phases of development.

Essential Skills:

  • Expertise in instrumentation system design and architecture.
  • Experience in embedded development.
  • Proficiency in Python3 and Linux environments.
  • Familiarity with FPGA or Xilinx technologies.

Preferred Experience:

  • Background in control systems development.
  • Knowledge of firmware development and electrical engineering principles (both digital and analog design).
  • Experience with FPGA and/or DSP for high-speed data acquisition is highly desirable.
  • Ability to rapidly prototype and validate software with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in optical absorption spectroscopy and laser-based instrumentation is beneficial.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Annual salary range: $200,000 - $260,000.
