Duke University Hospital is the largest facility within Duke Health, featuring 1048 patient beds, 65 operating rooms, and a wide array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center and an endo-surgery center.


General Overview of the Role


Engage in and oversee a range of technical tasks, assessments, and determinations involving the use of radioactive substances and measurement tools.


Key Responsibilities


Oversee and execute various technical procedures, including in vivo and in vitro studies; operate radiation detection and measurement devices, such as stationary imaging systems and scintillation gamma counters.

Prepare and calibrate radiopharmaceutical materials for patient administration; formulate these materials from pre-prepared kits. Review calibration data to identify trends that may indicate instrument issues. Analyze data, including patient study results and radioactive decay calculations.


Assess recorded images for technical quality and process computerized image data, including function curves and reconstructed SPECT images.


Attend to the physical and emotional needs of patients of all ages during examinations, initiating life support measures when necessary.

Maintain an inventory of supplies in the designated area; prepare and manage records related to the receipt, dispensing, and disposal of radiopharmaceuticals. Keep detailed records of orders, including brachytherapy procedures, and the handling of all radioactive materials within the department.


Provide training and technical support to radiologic technology students and other advanced imaging professionals; assist in onboarding new staff members.


Monitor the Nuclear Medicine Department for potential contamination using portable survey meters.


Conduct EKG preparations and tracings.


Perform additional related duties as required.


Contribute to the development and assessment of new procedures and techniques tailored to specific protocols as needed; consult with physicians regarding the application of nuclear medicine techniques.


Administer thyroid therapy to patients who have previously undergone clinical and nuclear medicine evaluations, ensuring the decay of pharmaceuticals and calculating the correct dosage using a dose calibrator, while observing patient treatment under the direct supervision of a radiologist.

Assist in the quality assurance program related to the calibration and upkeep of equipment.


Support the education and training of new physicians, including interns, residents, and fellows, as applicable. Perform other related duties as necessary.

Required Qualifications

Education

Completion of a program that meets eligibility criteria for registry/certification or currently holds the necessary registry or certification.



Experience

No additional experience required beyond the educational and certification prerequisites. Level I must obtain ARRT or NMCTB certification within 12 months of employment. Level II requires a minimum of two years' experience as a Nuclear Medicine technologist. Level III necessitates at least four years' experience in the specialty modality for promotion.



Licensure and Certification

ARRT (N) certification and/or NMTCB certification within 18 months of employment. BLS certification is also required.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proficiency in office-related computer software.

Understanding of radiation protection and safety protocols.

General computer literacy.

Skills in IV placement and management.
