Technical Procurement Specialist
Over the past two decades, the United States has faced significant shortages of generic injectable medications that are crucial for the lifesaving operations of hospitals. Currently, over 300 essential medications are reported to be in shortage, as highlighted by industry and FDA reports. Factors such as aggressive pricing strategies for sterile injectables, manufacturing difficulties, and exploitative pricing practices contribute to this crisis.
Who bears the brunt of this issue? Patients.
Civica is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization founded in 2018 by a coalition of health systems and philanthropic organizations aimed at alleviating chronic generic drug shortages and the associated high costs in the United States. The organization is led by a team of seasoned professionals from the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
Currently, more than 55 health systems are affiliated with Civica, representing over 1,500 hospitals and accounting for more than 30 percent of all hospital beds in the U.S. Civica has also provided essential medicines to the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Strategic National Stockpile. Since its inception, Civica's primary policy has been to prioritize the best interests of patients.
Civica has broadened its mission to include reducing medication costs at retail pharmacies. The organization has launched CivicaScript, a sister entity aimed at entering the retail pharmacy market, collaborating with Blue Cross Blue Shield entities and others to lower the prices of select high-cost generic drugs where market dynamics have failed to regulate costs.
Recently, Civica announced initiatives to develop, manufacture, and deliver affordable biosimilar insulin. Ensuring the consistent availability of affordable insulin will greatly benefit individuals who have had to ration their care or choose between essential medication and living expenses. Those who are uninsured or underinsured often face the highest out-of-pocket costs for their medications.
Long-acting and short-acting insulins will be produced and offered in both vials and pre-filled pens, priced at no more than $30 per vial and no more than $55 for a pack of five pens.
